A lean survival thriller with real teeth

David Ayer puts Brad Pitt through a brutal fight against the Alaskan wilderness after a plane crash, and the man-and-dog bond gives every setpiece weight. It holds 85% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.5 on IMDb, so the tension pays off. The scale of the elements and the open country demand a big screen.

Jay Gardiner is swallowed by a sperm whale with one hour of oxygen left, and that ticking countdown drives a relentlessly tense thriller.
